Success Measures

A Success Measure turns a goal into a number HIVE keeps up to date for you. You say what you want to measure and what you’re aiming for; HIVE reads the figure from your connected channels each day and shows how far along you are.

They sit on your strategic briefs and your objectives, so the target lives beside the plan it belongs to rather than in a spreadsheet somewhere else.

  • On a brief: open External from the top navigation, choose Strategic Briefs, and open a brief. Success Measures sits in the brief’s full view, directly under its KPI Targets list.
  • On an objective: on the same page, an objective’s header carries its own measures, covering everything grouped under it.
  • All of them together: Analytics → Measures lists every measure your company has, grouped by objective. That tab is read-only - it’s for reading and exporting, not for making changes.

Three levels, and a measure hangs from exactly one of them:

  • An objective is the outcome you’re working towards, over a period you choose. Briefs are grouped under it.
  • A brief is a piece of work with its own quarter and year.
  • A measure attaches to either an objective or a brief - never both. Measure at the objective level for the overall outcome, at the brief level for one piece of work.

A brief doesn’t have to sit under an objective. One that doesn’t still takes measures, and appears on its own at the bottom of the Measures tab.

Briefs and objectives are both set up on the Strategic briefs page.

  1. Open the brief (or find the objective’s header) and choose Add measure.

  2. What would you like to measure? Pick from the list below. Only the measures your connected channels can actually supply are offered.

  3. Which account? For most measures you choose the account it’s read from. Some measure across everything instead, and offer All channels as the default.

  4. Where you are now. The starting figure, so progress is measured from the right place. HIVE fills this in where it can read it.

  5. What is the target? The number you’re aiming for. A live preview shows what the measure reads today, so you can tell whether the target is sensible before you commit to it.

  6. Save. The measure appears as a card and updates on its own from then on.

Each measure is a card showing where you are against where you’re going.

  • Current and Target, with progress between them. Before there’s anything to show, the card shows the Target on its own.
  • Goal achieved appears when you reach the target, and Goal exceeded when you pass it.
  • Limit instead of Target means the measure is one you want to stay under rather than climb above.
  • Automatic or Manual tells you whether HIVE reads the figure or you enter it.
  • The channel it’s read from is named on the card, or All channels where it isn’t narrowed to one.

A short status sits on every card:

StatusMeaning
MeasuredHIVE has the figure and it’s complete.
Limited dataThere’s a figure, but something about it is worth knowing - the card says what.
No dataNothing to report yet. The card says why.
Not startedThe measure’s period hasn’t begun.
CollectingThe channel was connected recently and its history is still being gathered.
ErrorThe figure couldn’t be worked out.

Rather than showing a bare zero, HIVE says what’s missing. The sentence on the card is one of these:

What you’ll seeWhat it means
Nothing was recorded for this channel in the period. The channel is connected and working; there was simply no activity.
This channel’s history is still being collected, so there is nothing to measure from yet.Recently connected. It fills in on its own.
This channel has data, but none from before the period started, so growth cannot be measured from it.Growth needs a starting point that predates the period.
Based on N of N days; some days have no data.A partial picture - the figure is real but doesn’t cover every day.
The starting figure is from …, which is … before this period began, because no earlier reading exists. The baseline is older than the period, so growth is measured from further back than you might expect.
Tracking starts on ….The period hasn’t begun.
The … account is no longer connected, and figures stop at the date it was.Reconnect it to resume. See Connecting Platforms.
This Page is connected without insights permission, so Facebook does not report these figures. Reconnect it to start measuring.See the note on Facebook statistics.
Some posts on this channel have no publish date recorded, so they are not counted in any period. The real total is higher than the figure here.A small undercount on Posts Published.
The KPI goal this counts against is no longer on the brief, so there is nothing to count. The KPI goal a Linked Activity measure pointed at was removed.
No value has been entered yet.A manual measure waiting on you.

A Custom measure is the one HIVE can’t read for you. Its card carries a control for entering the figure - open it, type the current value, and save. Do that whenever the number changes; HIVE records when you last updated it.

Re-entering the same figure doesn’t count as an update, so the “last measured” date reflects when the number actually moved.

An objective groups several briefs under a shared outcome, and can carry measures of its own covering everything beneath it. Measure at the objective level for the overall result and at the brief level for one quarter’s contribution.

Two things to know, because they change what a measure reads:

  • Changing an objective’s start or end date changes the period its measures cover, and their figures are recalculated to match.
  • Deleting an objective also deletes the measures attached to it. The briefs underneath keep theirs.

Objectives are set up on the Strategic briefs page.

A measure keeps updating while its period is open. Once the period ends, HIVE waits a few days for the platforms to settle their final figures, then finalises the measure: the numbers stop moving and the card becomes read-only. That happens about nine days after the period ends.

A finalised measure is a record of what happened, so its wording changes to match - a manual measure nobody filled in reads “No data recorded for this period” rather than inviting you to add one.

Both surfaces export, using the same controls as the rest of Analytics:

  • From a brief - export that brief’s measures.
  • From the Measures tab - export everything on it, as one CSV per brief or objective inside a ZIP, or as a single PDF.

Each export records the figures and when they were read, along with the explanation on any measure that couldn’t give a number.

  • Editors create, edit, and delete measures and objectives.
  • Anyone can see them, and anyone can export.
  • The Measures tab is read-only for everyone, whatever their role.
